The cornea plays an important role in vision, and corneal blindness affects more than 10 million people worldwide. Corneal endothelial cell (CEC) therapy is considered to be a promising concept to overcome the common limitations of corneal replacement with allograft. Recent progress in biomaterial science has greatly contributed to rapid development of corneal regenerative medicine.

We have fabricated bioengineered CEC sheets on thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm)-grafted culture surfaces. However, due to the soft and fragile nature of cell sheet grafts, it is highly desirable to provide a temporary support structure for enhancing the graft-host integration during tissue reconstruction. To achieve this, gelatin hydrogel discs have been used as cell sheet carriers for transportation and surgical handling. This new book discusses the use of gelatin carriers in corneal endothelial cell delivery. (Imprint: Nova)
