Leadership in Management is the first authoritative book on leading R&D teams effectively in a fast-paced technology development environment. Markedly different from general management, no one has written in-depth about this before. Most useful are John’s insightful lessons from his long career and personal interactions with semiconductor industry leaders — notably Morris Chang and Jensen Huang, among others.“ – Dan Hutcheson, CEO, VLSIresearch, USA

Have you wondered why geese fly in V’s as shown on the cover of this book?  The bird in the front works the hardest to generate airflow that makes it easier to fly for the ones in the back.  This is what a leader should do in any organization. The geese quack to communicate and encourage the team.  The team helps every goose. When one goose gets sick or injured and leaves the formation, a few others leave the formation to fly with him.  They stay with him until he can get back to the team. Communication, Teamwork, and Trust are the resources of Leadership just like soil, fertilizer, and water for a plant. This is the reason why this book begins with an introduction, followed by these topics in its earlier chapters.

The trunk of the plant stands up straight to the sky like a leader in an enterprise. Its leadership cultivates branches organized for R&D, Operations, and Engineering, and for Marketing, Sales, and Service to make them function well and grow. People in these organizations develop and grow like leaves on the plant taking sunshine and nutrition to function and prosper. The book discusses leadership styles in all different branches to grow the enterprise successfully. When seeding or planting a tree, we must visualize the space and surrounding in the years ahead for flowers and/or fruits to emerge. By the same token, a leader needs to be aware of the environment and Culture and to have the Vision to imagine how his/her organization would grow in the future.

The author tells his real-life stories to illustrate his experiences and learnings in leadership. The book uses his practice-based theories to provide the scaffolding for others to think about and refine their approaches to lead and find personal fulfillment and happiness in life.

“Leadership in Management is the first authoritative book on leading R&D teams effectively in a fast-paced technology development environment. Markedly different from general management, no one has written in-depth about this before. “John Chen’s insights into the roles of leadership and management in the development of industry-leading innovation reflect his authentic voice and lived experience in pivotal technology leadership roles at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and NVIDIA. Through the lens of a scientist’s curiosity about what works, his ideas provide compelling perspectives on the DNA of human organizations that enable them to balance discipline and intensity with the flexibility needed to scale global innovation. I strongly recommend this book for anyone seeking fresh insights into the organizational transformations needed to shape adaptive capacity in the semiconductor industry.” – James Koch, Organization and Management Professor and Don C. Dodson Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, and former Dean of the School of Business at Santa Clara University

“Having worked in two of the leading global companies, TSMC and NVIDIA in Asia and America, John Chen is uniquely qualified to provide insights into various aspects of work in today’s high tech industry. He shared his experience in vivid stories that are insightful and fun to read. I would recommend this book to those who are new and experienced in their careers.” – Dr. Kenneth Kin, Honorary Chair Professor, MBA School, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, Former Senior V.P. of WW Marketing & Sales, TSMC, Taiwan
