Abstract

Glutaredoxins (Grxs) are small intracellular thiol enzymes that belong to reductases. They belong to the Grx system consisting of glutaredoxin, glutathione, glutathione reductase and NADPH. Glutaredoxins were discovered by Arne Holmgren, a Swedish professor of biochemistry in 1976. They were isolated from mutant Escherichia coli bacteria.
