Abstract

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the colon, belonging to inflammatory bowel diseases. Its etiology is unknown. The first reports of a disease with ulceration of the mucosa of the large intestine, which was also the cause of death of patients, come from 1793. Instead, the term ulcerative colitis was used by the British physician and researcher Samuel Wilks in 1859. He described the case of a 42-year-old woman who died after several months of diarrhea with a fever that was difficult to reduce. In a postmortem examination, he showed that the cause of the symptoms was ulcerative colitis and the terminal ileum.
