An ardent admirer of Plato, he is at the same time an enthusiast of Eastern philosophy. “Memory,” for example, is one of his last lecture series, “Natural Method of Mental Philosophy,” in which men are all taken as the halves, because men have aftersight, but not aforesight. Memory is, to Emerson, not only to call forth the past knowledge to the present, but also there is something related to the future, because some past things memorized in the mind are changed into “a possession of its law.” This is called “a mutation in quality,” by which past things in the mind come into “a possession of its law,” obeying the law, just as, in Phaedo, “all the apparent equals strive to attain absolute equality.” The Platonic method of Analogy works doubtlessly in Emerson. Men obey this law, because “Nature and [Man] are from one source, and that he, when humble and obedient, is nearer to the source.” The mind is such a movement, as he finds that “The mind yields sympathetically to the tendencies or laws which stream through things.” The idea of “humble and obedient,” or humility and obedience, comes originally from the Chaldæan Oracles and the Heetopades, which have a decisive influence on Emerson, through “the light-armed arrive at the summit,” and “the flower of the mind.” Because of this profound Eastern thought and ideas, he is called “this student of Eastern philosophy.” **Order the printed version and SAVE 50% on the e-book with Print+eBook. These fields are induced by thermal stresses in/around isotropic components of the porous two-component materials. The thermal stresses, which are observed during a cooling process, originate below relaxation temperature of a porous two-component material. These stresses are a consequence of different thermal expansion coefficients of material components. The thermal stresses and the stress-strain fields are determined for such a model material system, which corresponds to two types of real porous two-component materials with isotropic components. Results of this book are applicable within basic research (solid continuum mechanics, theoretical physics, materials science), as well as within the practice of engineering. The analytical models in this book can be incorporated into analytical, computational and experimental models of material stresses, interactions of energy barriers with dislocations and magnetic domain walls. Material scientists and engineers can determine such numerical values of structural parameters to result in maximum values of the thermal stresses and the stress-strain fields. Consequently, these maximum values result in maximum mechanical properties of the real porous two-component materials. Finally, this book presents such mathematical methods, which are required to determine these analytical models. ]]> The Biochemical Guide to Enzymes https://novapublishers.com/shop/the-biochemical-guide-to-enzymes/ Sun, 01 Jan 2023 14:19:04 +0000 https://novapublishers.com/?post_type=product&p=141269 David Aebisher, PhD and Dorota Bartusik-Aebisher, PhD Medical College of The University of Rzeszów, University of Rzeszów, Rzeszów, Poland Series: Biochemistry Research Trends BISAC: SCI007000 DOI: 10.52305/JMNV4489 In this book, the authors seek to demonstrate the significant role of enzymes used in metabolomic processes. It has the merit to remind organization studies scholars that there is more to qualitative research than just case studies or interviews. Through an examination of older and newer ways of conducting qualitative data collection, data analysis, and reporting within and outside the discipline, this book provides organizational researchers with a plethora of approaches to choose from. An insightful, yet compact book which points to new (methodological) directions in research pursuits" - Luca Giustiniano, Professor, LUISS Guido Carli University, Rome, Italy "As a scholar who does mixed methods research and with a great passion for rich and thick data, I find this book a very useful guide that will give organizational scholars a clear picture of what qualitative researchers do and what can be done more (better). This is a very useful book for researchers who prefer an evidence-based approach over normative guidelines. It shows that qualitative templates can be transformative and flexible rather than as a strict formula. A must have for new researchers and anyone interested in research without numbers." - Yanto Chandra, Professor, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, (Incoming professor in City University of Hong Kong), Hong Kong "This book goes beyond the “how to do” recipes for conducting qualitative research which are available aplenty in the market. Instead, it holds a mirror to organization studies and discusses how published authors have actually conducted and reported qualitative research in the disciplinary area. Furthermore, the book acknowledges how organization studies can still adopt and adapt new methodologies and data collection techniques from other, related disciplines. Subsequently, the book facilitates methodological advancement in organization studies through roadmaps and suitable examples." - Michael Gibbert, Professor, Università della Svizzera italiana, Lugano, Switzerland
This book discusses qualitative research in the context of organization studies, in an evidence-based manner. From using innovative research methods to including online spaces in their investigation, organizational researchers are experimenting and exploring the methodological possibilities offered by qualitative approaches. This book deliberates on ongoing trends as well as new qualitative methods which can be adopted by organizational scholars. The first chapter of the book discusses the motivation for the book and introduces the subsequent chapters. In the second chapter, the innovativeness of qualitative research methods in published articles is discussed. This chapter points out several innovative qualitative methods that organizational researchers can utilize– use cases, participatory inquiry research, narrative research, thematic analysis, thematic network analysis, critical interaction technique, Delphi technique, and domain analysis. The third chapter uses a theoretically developed coding scheme to deliberate on the involved research actions and key components in published grounded theory studies. The purpose of the chapter is to discuss which actions/key components are underutilized and under referenced in organization studies. The fourth chapter discusses a categorization of online spaces, focusing mainly on the roles played by these spaces in qualitative data collection. A four-step road map for guiding organizational scholars who are interested in using online spaces in their data collection is also provided thereafter. The fifth chapter concludes the discussion on the trends in qualitative research, discusses the takeaways of the book, and provides some directions for further exploration. This book thus aims to demonstrate the potential of the discussed qualitative methods as well as data collection and analysis techniques, by presenting examples from published research in organization studies and other closely related disciplines where methodological plurality is more prominent.]]>
The Future of U.S. Health Care? Corporate Power vs. the Common Good https://novapublishers.com/shop/the-future-of-u-s-health-care-corporate-power-vs-the-common-good/ Mon, 14 Nov 2022 14:44:55 +0000 https://novapublishers.com/?post_type=product&p=127118 John Geyman, M.D. - Professor Emeritus of Family Medicine, University of Washington, School of Medicine, Seattle, WA, USA Series: Health Care in Transition BISAC: MED035000; MED036000 DOI: 10.52305/SGHB6950 "This superb book offers a sweeping overview of how corporate power has infiltrated and distorted U.S. medical care, and the grave consequences for patients and health care personnel." - David Himmelstein, M.D. and Steffie Woolhandler, M.D., General Internists, Health Policy Experts, and Distinguished Professors of Public Health at City University of New York "This book is excellent. It’s a nice, readable length, and its message is clear and strong. I think most readers will understand how health care should no longer be driven by the business ethic when the service ethic is in dire need of relief from intrusion by the business culture, so that we can place the patient first." - Don McCanne, MD, Family Physician, Senior Health Policy Fellow and Past President of Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP)
Despite spending more for health care than any other country in the world, the U. S. has a health care system that compares poorly with other advanced countries in terms of access, cost, and quality of care. With so many Americans being unable to afford essential care, this problem has reached crisis proportions for much of our population. As a result, health care will continue to be a front burner issue in the forthcoming 2022 and 2024 election cycles. Today we have a corporatized medical-industrial complex that has resisted recurrent reform attempts over the years. It has become too big and complex for responsible government to rein in its excesses. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exposed its fragmentation and barriers to care. The traditional service ethic of health care has been replaced by profiteering of Wall Street corporate interests and investors seeking maximal profits vs the common good. Still controversial in this country is whether health care is a human right or a privilege based on ability to pay. Other advanced countries around the world have long since built their health care systems on the basis of universal coverage ensured by government. The future of health care depends on fundamental reform. It will require winning the battle between Wall Street/corporate America and Main Street that we cannot afford to lose. This book has three goals: (1) to bring historical perspective to how the medical-industrial complex has evolved to its present strangle-hold over health care comprising one-sixth of the nation’s economy; (2) to describe the shortfalls of our supposed system in terms of access, cost, inequities, and unacceptable quality, and how past reform attempts have failed; and (3) to consider two major scenarios for reform, together with political forces for and against each and their projected outcomes. Since present trends are unsustainable, we can only hope for positive moves toward reform, as will be described. **Order the printed version and SAVE 50% on the e-book with Print+eBook**]]>

If so, what steps have to be taken and models to be adopted? Structural transformation from agriculture to manufacturing and services is inevitable as a country develops. The role of agriculture in economic development and poverty reduction has long been debated. Due to the growth in agriculture, food becomes cheaper, farm incomes increase, thereby creating more jobs, and increased incomes stimulate economic diversification. Thus, development in the agricultural sector propels the rest of the economy. Hence, there is a need for greater resource allocation in favor of agriculture, particularly in predominantly agrarian areas. These concepts are explored through the chapters of this book. **Order the printed version and SAVE 50% on the e-book with Print+eBook.
