The first introductory chapter presents an overview of outcomes and future challenges of dating abuse in adolescents, focusing on the recent studies and examining prevalence, risk and protective factors and consequences of DV. Chapter two addresses a research involving quantitative and qualitative complementary studies with participants involved in same-sex relationships, aiming to give a more complete portrait of another aspect involved in the dating violence problem. The third chapter discusses the psychological traits of the adolescents perpetrating dating violence in order to identify the problematic characteristics that are related to the abuse and provide the most accurate intervention in terms of prevention. Chapter four introduces the problematic use of digital tools, explaining how they can foster abuse in the context of dating relationships, focusing on the prevalence and impacts of this emergent important phenomenon. Chapter five discusses sexting, an emerging phenomenon in dating relationships, associated with new psychosocial and digital risks. This new form of online sexual violence may increase the vulnerability of adolescent at a crucial stage in their sexual-affective development. Accordingly, the practices of sexting and its meaning in the dating relationship are characterized. Cyberbullying is another abusive typology that has been related to DDA, which is given special focus and attention in chapter six. Finally, the last chapter intends to review evidence-based DDA intervention and prevention, considering the different variables related to them, specifically the sociodemographic, risk and protective factors. The author has shown that their different ideas about the future development of the country are determined by the history of formation of the Ukrainian state. This disorder interferes to a great extent with functioning and development of children at different age. The volume provides a contemporary and future – oriented view of the issues and concepts in the pattern, mechanisms and remediation of ADHD. They include problems of social functioning and learning disability of children with ADHD, psychological, physiological, genetic and neurological mechanisms, cerebral substrate and etiology of this form of dysontogenesis, forensic implications for behavioral disturbances associated with childhood ADHD, practical suggestions for clinicians and psychologists, new methods of its assessment and efficient methods and approaches to remediation of children with ADHD. This disorder became an important international problem, independently of cultural and economic conditions of life, styles of education, learning systems with a prevalence of about 5% -7% in most cultures. Therefore better understanding of children suffering Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder could help these children, their parents and educators to develop efficient treatment plans and integrated approaches that are uniquely tailored to each individual child. No effort has been made, however, to attain unanimity of belief nor to proffer a platform of "planks" on which there is agreement. The consensus represented lies primarily in outlook, in conviction of what is most likely to be fruitful in method of approach. As the title page suggests, the volume presents a unity in attitude rather than a uniformity in results. Consequently each writer is definitively responsible only for his own essay. The reader will note that the Essays endeavor to embody the common attitude in application to specific fields of inquiry which have been historically associated with philosophy rather than as a thing by itself. Beginning with philosophy itself, subsequent contributions discuss its application to logic, to mathematics, to physical science, to psychology, to ethics, to economics, and then again to philosophy itself in conjunction with esthetics and religion. The reader will probably find that the significant points of agreement have to do with the ideas of the genuineness of the future, of intelligence as the organ for determining the quality of that future so far as it can come within human control, and of a courageously inventive individual as the bearer of a creatively employed mind.]]> Unlocking Erik: A Freedom Journey to Restore the Speech of Those with Locked-In Syndrome https://novapublishers.com/shop/unlocking-erik-a-freedom-journey-to-restore-the-speech-of-those-with-locked-in-syndrome/ Tue, 07 Dec 2021 16:16:01 +0000 https://novapublishers.com/?post_type=product&p=68671 Series: Neuroscience Research Progress BISAC: MED057000 DOI: 10.52305/DHHV4998 This book depicts the trials and tribulations when trying to restore speech to Erik who was locked-in (paralyzed and mute) at age 16. We implanted electrodes into his brain, initiating a decade of breakthrough research in speech recovery. It lead to the author’s own brain implant and the consequent successful offline development of the speech prosthetic whereby mute, locked-in people can speak. Part 1 is Erik’s story of how he became locked-in following a brainstem stroke, and our efforts to break him out of his locked-in state by helping him speak. It describes my decision making, the tremendous contribution of his family, their anguish and the very relevant comparison with famous locked-in people, namely, Stephen Hawking and Jean-Dominique Bauby (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly). It also documents conversations between the author and Erik’s Dad, Eddie. Eddie describes how he was trained in a rehabilitation hospital to take care of his son. His 16-year devotion to his son is unparalleled and heroic. Part 2 is a condensed and easy to follow version of the scientific aspects of this research. Part 2 also contains important contributions from other researchers in the field, in a question and answer format. Figures and videos on the website (www.neuralsignals.com) augment the text. Finally, there is a description of the documentary associated with this book written by the producer called ‘Father of the Cyborgs’. Please note that each part may be purchased separately. Hebert (Editor) Series: HIV/AIDS - Medical, Social and Psychological Aspects BISAC: MED022020 HIV/AIDS: Pathophysiology, Prevention and Treatment first discusses how depression and anxiety occur more frequently in people living with HIV/AIDS than in the general population. Anxiety and depression increase the morbidity of HIV by causing poor adherence to treatment, increased risk for suicide, greater chance for recurrence and various other significant mechanisms. The authors present an analysis of sociological research showing the prevalence of stigma and discrimination against patients with HIV infection at the dental office. Fear of stigma is a key factor in reducing the willingness to disclose HIV status. The recommended treatment for chronic hepatitis C virus infection with HIV coinfection is reviewed, focusing on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacology of drug-drug interactions between antiretroviral therapy and direct-acting antivirals. Insight on the long road towards the eradication of HIV/AIDS is discussed in an effort to achieve sustainable development goals and targets by 2030. Studies conducted in relation to biomedical, structural, behavioural and technological interventions are cited to substantiate this discussions. The closing chapter outlines updated recommendations guiding healthcare professionals to employ treatment as prevention. A discussion of the public health measures necessary to promote the success of treatment as prevention is also included. Krogh (Editor) Series: Environmental Research Advances BISAC: SCI026000 Landslides: Monitoring, Susceptibility and Management opens with a presentation of the application of geographic information system -based statistical modeling in the delineation of landslide susceptible zones for Rani Khola River basin of Sikkim Himalayas, India, by combining various landslide conditioning factors, namely: geological, topographical and hydrological parameters. Inaccessible areas prone to landsliding are delineated, as increasing awareness of the human, economic, and environment effects of these natural disasters is necessary to promote the safety of human life. The authors develop a broad-based landslide susceptibility assessment considering causal factors and different triggering conditions for hillslopes bordering the Monterrey Metropolitan Area. This approach has been computed on a cell-by-cell basis in a geographic information system. The concluding study attempts to present a distribution map of major rainfall-induced landslides in March to April 2019 in Iran, as well as review the local geological characteristics of major case studies. Throughout these ingenious works he interspersed riddles, math and logic games, and a host of other puzzles, reflecting his interest in the ludic (playful) imagination. It is not widely known that Carroll is one of the greatest puzzle makers of history, composing them not only for children, but also for adults in magazines, periodicals, and books. One of his puzzle masterpieces is the so-called doublet puzzle, which he wrote for Vanity Fair, and is still one of the most loved wordplay games to this day. There have been various anthologies of Carroll’s puzzles in recent decades, but virtually no study of their importance as part of a unique “puzzle art” exists. This book aims to examine this art as it manifests itself in Carroll’s many puzzle creations, both within his novels, and in his many other writings. It dissects the blend of logic and imagination that he employs in creating riddles, anagrams, acrostics, math puzzles, logic games, and a host of other puzzle genres—all of which are discussed in the book. The main theme is that Carroll’s literary writings cannot be truly grasped without taking into account his puzzle art.]]> Salivary Glands: Structure, Functions and Regulation https://novapublishers.com/shop/salivary-glands-structure-functions-and-regulation/ Wed, 17 Nov 2021 13:50:15 +0000 https://novapublishers.com/?post_type=product&p=67987 Alicia S. The World Health Organization considers perinatal depression a global problem, including the effects of maternal health, in terms of mortality and morbidity, on the newborn. This book has been inspired by the clinical practice of authors involved in its creation. It concerns perinatal depression starting from its genetic background, describing clinical features of this disorder, taking into consideration the impact of perinatal depression on child development during first years of life. We know that an altered gestational uterine environment due to psychiatric disorders or stress exposure can cause permanent consequences in offsprings, thus prevention and care of this disorder is mandatory. A chapter has been dedicated to pharmacological treatments during pregnancy and postpartum always considering the importance of a drug treatment when necessary to be chosen with respect to safety profile. Moreover a chapter has been entirely dedicated to maternal functioning, describing the Barkin Index of Maternal Functioning (BIMF), a self-report measure of postpartum maternal functioning assessing daily functioning within the context of the maternal role. A report of the available recent studies on this topic, although not comprehensive, is reported in this book.]]> Bring My Smile Back: Working with Unhappy Children in Education https://novapublishers.com/shop/bring-my-smile-back-working-with-unhappy-children-in-education/ Sat, 31 Jul 2021 14:27:18 +0000 https://novapublishers.com/?post_type=product&p=67390 Maria A. Free play outdoors helps develop social capacities and reduces aggression. A number of caregivers, besides mothers, influence the development of empathy, child’s IQ and ego resilience. We are aware that we are lacking on all these fronts and in most cases there is not much we can do about it. Small, nuclear families, two working parents, urban lifestyle and a huge influence media has on children development leaves very little that teachers and parents can do to affect children’s development and happiness. Most children do not know the meaning of empathy. Compassionate, moral behaviour is considered ‘uncool.’ Scientists believe that the problems are in the strange cultural and social practices of our modern life, particularly in the way we raise our children. This book aims to explore the crucial link between emotions, wellbeing and learning and the wider social factors affecting children’s happiness. The authors draw from a range of experience, examples, case studies and educational approaches to present this engaging text on children’s wellbeing and emotions. Focusing on children’s happiness more than on their academic achievements and positive behaviour, this book puts Children’s Smiles at the heart of teaching! (Imprint: Nova)]]>
