Somatic cells can be reprogrammed and serve as genetic material to generate a new individual, embryonic stem cells (ESCs), or a cell type of another kind than the original somatic cell. Production of ESCs from the patient’s own somatic cells is an attractive supply in medicine, in particular as individual human model system for drug-screening, drug-design or toxicology testing, but could also be used in regenerative medicine. This book provides some background, molecular mechanisms and breakthroughs underlying reprogramming of somatic cells and discusses some of the obstacles to overcome. (Imprint: Nova Biomedical)
