The strength and stability of desert sand dunes present challenging problems to geotechnical engineers. To overcome these problems, sulfur concrete as a new material was developed and evaluated in view of its microstructure, physical, thermal, mechanical, hydraulic and chemical properties. Sulfur is used as the main binding material in sulfur concrete for years. The use of elemental sulfur with aggregates to manufacture sulfur concrete encountered problems due to the complex nature of sulfur chemistry.

While initially excellent strength properties were obtained, over a short period of time the material would fail. However, eventually it will convert to a brittle orthorhombic crystal structure with poor strength characteristics. This book examines the modification of elemental sulfur and discusses how the key to this modification came with the discovery of a novel technique to treat sulfur by preventing the allotropic transformation.
