“The Handbook of Psychology of Emotions” is a timely, comprehensive, and authoritative edition consisting of chapters by an eminent group of international emotion researchers who provide a cutting-edge overview of all major aspects of human emotions. In addition to reviewing the current state of the art in a number of main research areas related to the topic of emotion, the authors present squarely an outlook for the future research on emotion.

Volume 1 is divided into four sections. Section One covers a brief discussion on the question of “What is an emotion?”, the general theoretical issues concerning the link between emotions and action as well as the link between culture and conceptual contents of emotion. Section Two focuses on the impact of emotions in developmental and educational settings providing a chapter on research hot topics, trends, and neglected research domains in developmental psychology contexts, and a chapter on social referencing in infancy.

In addition, it provides four chapters comprehensively reviewing the link between anxiety and cognitive performance, the application of psychology of emotion in educational settings, the role of emotionality in mathematical problem solving, and the impact of self-conscious emotions in education. Section Three contains chapters on specific psychopathological and health related issues. It provides a chapter on emotion and genetics, a chapter on rumination and emotions, and a chapter on the role of emotions in adjusting to political and military violence. Furthermore it comprises a chapter on emotion and obesity, a chapter on meta-emotions, anxiety and depression, a chapter on sensation seeking and emotion. In addition the influence of light on mood and emotion, affective reactions to physical activity, emotions and performance as well as emotions and mindfulness is reviewed in separate chapters.

Finally, Section Four contains chapters on improving emotional competences in adults, emotional intelligence, self-leadership and emotion regulation, adaptive emotional functioning and regulating the impact of emotions in order to improve decisions. These are followed by two short communications on the link between sleep, memory, and emotions and oxytocinergic modulation of emotional processes in social interactions. (Imprint: Nova)
