An ardent admirer of Plato, he is at the same time an enthusiast of Eastern philosophy. “Memory,” for example, is one of his last lecture series, “Natural Method of Mental Philosophy,” in which men are all taken as the halves, because men have aftersight, but not aforesight. Memory is, to Emerson, not only to call forth the past knowledge to the present, but also there is something related to the future, because some past things memorized in the mind are changed into “a possession of its law.” This is called “a mutation in quality,” by which past things in the mind come into “a possession of its law,” obeying the law, just as, in Phaedo, “all the apparent equals strive to attain absolute equality.” The Platonic method of Analogy works doubtlessly in Emerson. Men obey this law, because “Nature and [Man] are from one source, and that he, when humble and obedient, is nearer to the source.” The mind is such a movement, as he finds that “The mind yields sympathetically to the tendencies or laws which stream through things.” The idea of “humble and obedient,” or humility and obedience, comes originally from the Chaldæan Oracles and the Heetopades, which have a decisive influence on Emerson, through “the light-armed arrive at the summit,” and “the flower of the mind.” Because of this profound Eastern thought and ideas, he is called “this student of Eastern philosophy.” **Order the printed version and SAVE 50% on the e-book with Print+eBook. Throughout human existence people have tried to improve their living conditions by accomplishing their tasks in more efficient and effective ways. This can often be linked to the notion of work but lifelong learning, whilst important in the workplace, affects all parts of our existence. It not only aids us to understand our tasks but also how we fit into a wider society. Without lifelong learning our society, and we as individuals, would stagnate. It is not something that we always do purposively but is a part of being human. We acquire skills and knowledge and then apply them sometimes in unrelated scenarios. Lifelong learning has benefits not just in terms of our work but can also help in terms of socialization. It also has potential health benefits, for example, in terms of enhancing neuroplasticity and aiding in the development of emotional intelligence and empathy for others. We become more confident in what we do as we achieve increased knowledge and understanding through lifelong learning, as can be evidenced in many of the contributions in this edited collection. We all benefit from lifelong learning and have a role to play in both in terms of educating ourselves and a duty to help to educate others in order to create a better society. The contributors and editors hope that this collection can play even a miniscule part in that development and we have certainly been through new experiences that have contributed to our own lifelong learning. **Order the printed version and SAVE 50% on the e-book with Print+eBook. The latter were forged as “apocalyptic visions” of the world warning humans of extinction unless they changed their ways. Not only stories, but art works, painted on murals and canvas, tell the same kind of apocalyptic narrative, imploring humans to change their ways. This book is about the meaning and impact that such apocalyptic visions, ancient and contemporary, have had on human history. It is based on the premise that pandemics have changed the world socially, politically, and culturally. The main claim put forward is that pandemics have always been instrumental in introducing new creative forms of culture, from prose fiction to current-day memetic humor, through which people come to grips with the drastic changes that pandemics bring about. The cultural forms that served this purpose do not disappear but remain intrinsic in the overall cultural-historical paradigm of humanity.]]> Applications of Traditional Equestrian Sports in the World https://novapublishers.com/shop/applications-of-traditional-equestrian-sports-in-the-world/ Mon, 26 Dec 2022 20:41:31 +0000 https://novapublishers.com/?post_type=product&p=141519 Adem Kaya, PhD - Assistant Professor, Sport Management, Bowie State University, Maryland, USA Mehmet Turkmen, PhD - Director of Traditional Sports and Games Research Institute, Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey; Professor, Mus Alparslan University, Turkey Series: Sports and Athletics Preparation, Performance, and Psychology BISAC: SPO057000; SPO078000; SPO021000 DOI: 10.52305/FWUB5550 "Through 20 chapters and 416 pages, this book, published by Nova Science Publishers Inc., provides a detailed description of traditional equestrian sports from a historical point of view and also shows current applications. Physical culture and sport, as a product of certain historical conditions for the development of society, form the sum of the historically revealed results of human spiritual activity. Equestrian games were especially popular among the Turkic peoples of South Siberia, Altai, the ancestral home of all Turkic peoples. The horse formed the mobile basis of the nomadic economy and was the personification of beauty, purity, and speed. A symbolic expression of "traditional" sovereign tribal authority depended on the current ruling political framework having quality horses and equestrian skills. It is easy to conclude that this event is formulated again with another tribe or lineage and that the leadership passes to the tribe in which it was formulated. It is clear that in the nomadic ancient Turkic peoples, equestrian activities were not simply an opportunity to reveal their "natural" fighting instincts or to express them through symbols. They are also carefully structured public organizations organized around societal values with broad moral and political repercussions. This book contains twenty chapters reviewing the cultural significance of a variety of traditional equestrian sports around the world, deeply examining the social impacts of the game and the cultural traditions that arise from them.]]>

It has the merit to remind organization studies scholars that there is more to qualitative research than just case studies or interviews. Through an examination of older and newer ways of conducting qualitative data collection, data analysis, and reporting within and outside the discipline, this book provides organizational researchers with a plethora of approaches to choose from. An insightful, yet compact book which points to new (methodological) directions in research pursuits" - Luca Giustiniano, Professor, LUISS Guido Carli University, Rome, Italy "As a scholar who does mixed methods research and with a great passion for rich and thick data, I find this book a very useful guide that will give organizational scholars a clear picture of what qualitative researchers do and what can be done more (better). This is a very useful book for researchers who prefer an evidence-based approach over normative guidelines. It shows that qualitative templates can be transformative and flexible rather than as a strict formula. A must have for new researchers and anyone interested in research without numbers." - Yanto Chandra, Professor, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, (Incoming professor in City University of Hong Kong), Hong Kong "This book goes beyond the “how to do” recipes for conducting qualitative research which are available aplenty in the market. Instead, it holds a mirror to organization studies and discusses how published authors have actually conducted and reported qualitative research in the disciplinary area. Furthermore, the book acknowledges how organization studies can still adopt and adapt new methodologies and data collection techniques from other, related disciplines. Subsequently, the book facilitates methodological advancement in organization studies through roadmaps and suitable examples." - Michael Gibbert, Professor, Università della Svizzera italiana, Lugano, Switzerland
This book discusses qualitative research in the context of organization studies, in an evidence-based manner. From using innovative research methods to including online spaces in their investigation, organizational researchers are experimenting and exploring the methodological possibilities offered by qualitative approaches. This book deliberates on ongoing trends as well as new qualitative methods which can be adopted by organizational scholars. The first chapter of the book discusses the motivation for the book and introduces the subsequent chapters. In the second chapter, the innovativeness of qualitative research methods in published articles is discussed. This chapter points out several innovative qualitative methods that organizational researchers can utilize– use cases, participatory inquiry research, narrative research, thematic analysis, thematic network analysis, critical interaction technique, Delphi technique, and domain analysis. The third chapter uses a theoretically developed coding scheme to deliberate on the involved research actions and key components in published grounded theory studies. The purpose of the chapter is to discuss which actions/key components are underutilized and under referenced in organization studies. The fourth chapter discusses a categorization of online spaces, focusing mainly on the roles played by these spaces in qualitative data collection. A four-step road map for guiding organizational scholars who are interested in using online spaces in their data collection is also provided thereafter. The fifth chapter concludes the discussion on the trends in qualitative research, discusses the takeaways of the book, and provides some directions for further exploration. This book thus aims to demonstrate the potential of the discussed qualitative methods as well as data collection and analysis techniques, by presenting examples from published research in organization studies and other closely related disciplines where methodological plurality is more prominent.]]>

The meaning of the term “fit and proper”, for assessing people as professionals, in contrast to a well-structured good character test, is insufficiently specific to be used as a set of criteria for admission to a profession. The parties to a “fit and proper” assessment are actually the court and members of the public, with the court making a judgment in its own cause, and without the public ever participating in the assessment. A “fit and proper” assessment suggests a systemic inquiry against the applicant, inferring both bias and inherent public denunciation. Thus, the book contains in-depth research into these topics: The Fit and Proper Person Test: The Theory; The ‘Fit and Proper Person’ in Malaysia and Singapore; The Origin of the Professions; The Fitness and Propriety of Subaltern Groups; Délation of Character; The Stasis of Disrepute; Child Labor and the Subaltern Working Class; Coercive Moral Hazard.
