An ardent admirer of Plato, he is at the same time an enthusiast of Eastern philosophy. “Memory,” for example, is one of his last lecture series, “Natural Method of Mental Philosophy,” in which men are all taken as the halves, because men have aftersight, but not aforesight. Memory is, to Emerson, not only to call forth the past knowledge to the present, but also there is something related to the future, because some past things memorized in the mind are changed into “a possession of its law.” This is called “a mutation in quality,” by which past things in the mind come into “a possession of its law,” obeying the law, just as, in Phaedo, “all the apparent equals strive to attain absolute equality.” The Platonic method of Analogy works doubtlessly in Emerson. Men obey this law, because “Nature and [Man] are from one source, and that he, when humble and obedient, is nearer to the source.” The mind is such a movement, as he finds that “The mind yields sympathetically to the tendencies or laws which stream through things.” The idea of “humble and obedient,” or humility and obedience, comes originally from the Chaldæan Oracles and the Heetopades, which have a decisive influence on Emerson, through “the light-armed arrive at the summit,” and “the flower of the mind.” Because of this profound Eastern thought and ideas, he is called “this student of Eastern philosophy.” **Order the printed version and SAVE 50% on the e-book with Print+eBook. The latter were forged as “apocalyptic visions” of the world warning humans of extinction unless they changed their ways. Not only stories, but art works, painted on murals and canvas, tell the same kind of apocalyptic narrative, imploring humans to change their ways. This book is about the meaning and impact that such apocalyptic visions, ancient and contemporary, have had on human history. It is based on the premise that pandemics have changed the world socially, politically, and culturally. The main claim put forward is that pandemics have always been instrumental in introducing new creative forms of culture, from prose fiction to current-day memetic humor, through which people come to grips with the drastic changes that pandemics bring about. The cultural forms that served this purpose do not disappear but remain intrinsic in the overall cultural-historical paradigm of humanity.]]> Child Mortality in Eritrea: An Overview of History and Progress https://novapublishers.com/shop/child-mortality-in-eritrea-an-overview-of-history-and-progress/ Sun, 30 Oct 2022 14:41:43 +0000 https://novapublishers.com/?post_type=product&p=122119 Series: African Studies BISAC: SOC042000; SOC057000 DOI: https://doi.org/10.52305/CGAF1066 Across the world, today child mortality is far less common than it once was. Yet, huge disparities remain and improving child survival is still a matter of urgent global concern. However, an emerging success story is that of Eritrea, located in Northeast Africa. Despite limited resources, an extremely difficult regional geopolitical context, and an array of daunting challenges, the young country has achieved remarkable progress on reducing child deaths. Eritrea’s child mortality story has largely gone unrecognized; this book helps to fill the gap. It traces the history of child mortality in the country and unpacks the multifaceted factors that have helped to drive its success. Guided by high-quality research conducted on the ground, presenting a comprehensive review of a wide range of historical and current materials, and full of the latest, up-to-date data, this book contributes greatly to deepening understanding of child mortality and Eritrea. **Order both the printed version and the e-book together and SAVE!**]]> The Lighter Classics in Music: A Comprehensive Guide to Musical Masterworks in a Lighter Vein https://novapublishers.com/shop/the-lighter-classics-in-music-a-comprehensive-guide-to-musical-masterworks-in-a-lighter-vein/ Wed, 12 Oct 2022 13:39:39 +0000 https://novapublishers.com/?post_type=product&p=126924 David Ewen (Author) Series: Fine Arts, Music and Literature BISAC: MUS006000 In one brilliant volume, David Ewen offers a classic in musical literature. He researched the cultures of the ancient Near East, issues of Bible Studies, Christology, Georgian folklore, and mythology. “Georgian Mythology” introduces an unknown world of myths to English-speaking readers. Its creator is one of the world’s oldest nations which traces the history of its statehood back to the 4th century BC. The Georgian mythological world is valuable not only for its antiquity but, most importantly, for its originality. Its significance is further increased by the fact that in the mountainous regions of Georgia (especially in eastern Georgia), the traditional lifestyle was preserved until almost the middle of the 20th century and fragmentarily is still found today. The worldview, customs, and traditions of such a society are completely based on mythical stories. Myths tell us about everything that happened from the creation of the world to the establishment of social institutions - ancestors, heroic adventures of supernatural beings, secret initiation, and others. Georgian mythological texts are truly unique and universal; they provide us with invaluable information about the existence and life of traditional society. They introduce us to the ancient mytho-religious consciousness, moral and legal values, and spiritual culture of the Georgian people which, in the words of the author of the book, "fully expresses the hidden abilities of the whole nation, its potential.” The book is notably valuable for specialists in various fields of humanities, researchers interested in traditional society, and students. Yet, every educated person will find it fascinating, especially a literate reader keen on the history of culture. **Order the printed version and SAVE 50% on the e-book with Print+eBook. Be the Change: Learning and Teaching for the Creative Industries considers what change needs to look like within performance training and what we can do to create it. Each chapter captures insights from performing arts industry and educational experts, with reflections from high profile actors and practitioners. The focus is on action, not talk, seeking to provide those teaching, facilitating and leading performance training with ideas and practical steps to work differently. This book considers the training provider’s role in increasing representation and inclusivity, looking forward to a sustainable and resilient future. Whilst efforts to broaden access have had some success, for too long, people have felt excluded from audiences and from careers in the industry. Enabling future practitioners includes care of well-being, facilitating structured approaches to intimate scenes and adopting sustainable practices. The lack of African history curricula in colleges and universities is a manifestation of influential American educators who have promoted the idea that Africa is irrelevant and inconsequential in today’s global affairs. In this context, many educators have supported a racial ideology of falsified, delusional-based information about the accomplishments of Europeans and Euro-Americans in comparison with people of African descent that “was clearly established, protected, and perpetuated by the U.S. economic, political, educational, social, and cultural spheres.” Although this perspective is one of the greatest falsehoods and misconceptions in the world, the educational system buttresses this misinformation by not positioning African history as a significant course of study within the Western liberal arts tradition. This work aims to correct this absence by presenting a comprehensive overview of the development of civilizations in Africa, the birthplace of humanity, as well as the history of Africa-oriented curricula in higher education. **Order both the printed version and the e-book together and SAVE!**]]>

The notion of modernity, an evolutionary justification for a turbulent array of hazards, drives rapid change, the majority of which is irreversible. Wars bring about irreversible change, which has far-reaching consequences for future generations. We start to grasp the impact of these shifts as we experience them through time, and we research, write about, and learn from them. Understanding the impact of post-war change requires contemplation. The aim to develop stronger post-war communities necessitates a reflection on how conflicts have separated mankind and how humanity's nature might be used to serve others. The plans that are made and the decisions taken, especially by those in positions of influence, carry greater weight in terms of the speed at which risks to humanity evolve if not addressed in time, along with their corresponding effects. As we journey through age and experience our own wars, we can choose to blindfold our way through time or rise above with strength to reach out to others, a process which in truth brings about self-actualisation. **Order both the printed version and the e-book together and SAVE!**]]> The Mind Has Mountains: The Germanic Mystics from 1100-1960 https://novapublishers.com/shop/the-mind-has-mountains-the-germanic-mystics-from-1100-1960/ Wed, 15 Jun 2022 14:30:45 +0000 https://novapublishers.com/?post_type=product&p=126786 Series: Historical Figures BISAC: HIS014000; REL047000; REL108020 DOI: 10.52305/OFVL9913 The Mind Has Mountains traces the history of Germanic mysticism from the nun Hildegard von Bingen to the founding of psychoanalysis. Its focal points are Meister Eckhart, Jacob Boehme, and Idealist philosophy. It takes its readers down what Hopkins called “cliffs of fall, frightful, sheer, no-man-fathomed”: the nothingness of Eckhart’s God beyond God, Boehme’s Ungrund, and the spirit of the depths that Carl Jung termed the collective unconscious. Characters who traverse its pages include heretic nuns, laywomen living as nuns, a priest whose listeners collapsed to the ground on hearing one of his sermons, the author of a medieval guide to Christlikeness, a cartographer of heaven and hell, and an apostate Theosophist. These spiritual guides are not so much vestiges of a prescientific era as exponents of the knowledge of God that comes through the embrace of unitive love, or what the greatest philosopher of German Idealism called the becoming of the divine. **Order the printed version and SAVE 50% on the e-book with Print+eBook**]]> The Life and Times of the World’s Most Famous Female Scientists https://novapublishers.com/shop/the-life-and-times-of-the-worlds-most-famous-female-scientists/ Mon, 09 May 2022 14:36:25 +0000 https://novapublishers.com/?post_type=product&p=115181 Manuel F. Some have worked with a spouse, some have worked in a university or research center, and some have chanced upon a number of insights which have revolutionized science and biology as well as microbiology. This book delves into the lives and times of many women who have contributed to isotopes, viruses, leprosy, treatments such as streptomycin, and realms such as malaria and pulsars. How these women achieved so much, sometimes against tremendous odds, is amazing in and of itself. We have attempted to look at a number of women, from various countries around the world, who have achieved eminence and fame. Sadly, some have been neglected and we have attempted to highlight those whose contributions need to receive more recognition and respect. In this day and age of female achievement, these women are stellar examples of fortitude and achievement for young girls and adolescents to emulate. Reading about the work and achievements of these famous and not-so-famous women may supply hope and encouragement and motivate females to achieve their fullest potential. **Order both the printed version and the e-book together and SAVE!**]]>
