In this book a description is made. We carried out a description and analysis of the main indications for use in different scenarios. This includes an analysis of the rationale for the use of noninvasive ventilation in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, noninvasive mechanical ventilation and work of breathing pattern using different interfaces, and perioperative medicine. We include equipment and interface analysis and application of lung ultrasound in noninvasive ventilation. Along these lines, we clarify the role of noninvasive ventilation in anesthesiology and perioperative noninvasive ventilation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), preoxygenation in cardiac and liver transplants and anesthesiology procedures (non-intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery). Finally, we conclude this book with key recommendations about noninvasive ventilation in the post-anesthesia care unit of a health care organization. We believe that this book consolidates a scientific reference for the adequate indication of noninvasive ventilation in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine. **Order both the printed version and the e-book together and SAVE!**]]> Ambulatory Multidisciplinary Management of Postoperative Pain https://novapublishers.com/shop/ambulatory-multidisciplinary-management-of-postoperative-pain/ Tue, 01 Mar 2022 14:14:13 +0000 https://novapublishers.com/?post_type=product&p=112826 Series: Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine BISAC: MED058220; MED006000 DOI: https://doi.org/10.52305/THMZ4895 Postoperative pain is a common problem in clinical practice that becomes chronic in approximately 10% to 30% of adults who undergo surgery, being severe in 5 to 10% of them. It is one of the main causes of chronic pain, which makes it a major public health problem. It generates in patients who suffer it a worsening of their quality of life, their psychological well-being, and disability with the consequent incapacity for work. Given that both its etiology and its consequences are complex and multifactorial, postoperative pain must be approached from a multimodal perspective: preventive, pharmacological, nutritional, rehabilitative, nursing intervention, psychological and, in those refractory cases, through surgical approaches or nerve block techniques. This book aims at first to analyze the pathophysiological and psychological bases that underlie its etiology. Next, it aims to carry out an updated review of the multidisciplinary programs for the treatment of postoperative pain that have been carried out and what their results have been. Moreover, the contribution of each of these disciplines in the ambulatory management of postoperative pain will be reviewed. Finally, we want to study the peculiarities of the management of this type of pain in the oncological patient, as well as the personal and socioeconomic consequences and the increase in other comorbidities of this important reason for consultation. **Order both the printed version and the e-book together and SAVE!**]]> Advances in PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit) https://novapublishers.com/shop/advances-in-pacu-post-anesthesia-care-unit/ Sun, 26 Dec 2021 20:54:41 +0000 https://novapublishers.com/?post_type=product&p=109275 Ahmet Şen, MD (Editor) - Associate Professor, Anesthesiology and Reanimation, University of Health Sciences, Samsun Training and Research Hospital, Trabzon, Turkey Series: Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine BISAC: MED006000 DOI: https://doi.org/10.52305/EWZA6759 With the term perioperative anesthesia, it is advocated that anesthesia should be considered an exhaustive process, especially in major surgeries. The purposes of this process are as follows: in the preoperative period, the patient's preparation is provided in different clinical and psychological ways; in the intraoperative period, hemodynamic, surgical, cardiac, and all systems are protected; and in the postoperative period, the patient is recovered from the anesthesia, and short-term complications are prevented. In the postoperative period, in terms of patient safety, anesthesia recovery, and surgical follow-up, it is undoubtedly beneficial to follow up with patients in PACU for the first 24-48 hours before taking them to the service, especially for early complications, prolonged recovery, and close follow-up. PACU, an important constitute of the perioperative process, is also where every risky postoperative patient will be followed. This book aims to examine every stage of the PACU process from a clinical perspective beyond nursing care and support the medical literature. In the book chapters, the expected risks in the patients and those that should be applied clinically in treatment and follow-up processes will be discussed in general. **Order both the printed version and the e-book together and SAVE!**]]> Management of Postoperative Pain within Eras Protocols in Surgery https://novapublishers.com/shop/management-of-postoperative-pain-within-eras-protocols-in-surgery/ Tue, 08 Jun 2021 16:12:37 +0000 https://novapublishers.com/?post_type=product&p=100938 Jaime Ruiz-Tovar, MD, PhD (Editor) - Professor of Surgery. Universidad Rey Juan Carlos. Madrid, Spain Series: Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine BISAC: MED006000 Target Audience: Surgeons, Nurses, Anesthesiologists, Endocrinologists, Medical students, Patients Description: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programs are a multidisciplinary approach in the perioperative care of the patient undergoing major surgery, including pre, intra and postoperative measures, based on the actual evidence published in literature (evidence-based medicine), to improve the postoperative recovery of the patient. ERAS protocols have been widely developed in colorectal surgery, but given their excellent results, new protocols and guidelines have been developed in other surgical fields, including abdominal and extra-abdominal areas. One of the main keypoints in the multidisciplinary approach is a correct management of postoperative pain. Adequate analgesia implies lower morphine requirements and facilitates early postoperative mobilization. Consequently, lower postoperative ileus and earlier oral intake can be achieved. Altogether, this leads to an improvement of the overall quality of life. Multimodal analgesia is one of the main tools employed for these aims. It consists of the administration of different analgesic drugs by different ways, reducing the risk of toxicity and the appearance of adverse effects. In addition, the different analgesic methods used provide a synergistic effect, maximizing the analgesic result. The aim of this book is to update the actual evidence about ERAS protocols on different surgical approaches, analyzing the different analgesic schemes used in different approaches, all of them including the principle of multimodal analgesia.]]> Anesthesia for Non-Anesthesiologists https://novapublishers.com/shop/anesthesia-for-non-anesthesiologists/ Tue, 27 Nov 2018 19:32:00 +0000 https://novapublishers.com/?post_type=product&p=18955 Series: New Developments in Medical Research BISAC: MED006000 Anesthesiology is one of the least understood medical specialties. The drugs and equipment are specialized to a point where physicians in other fields have little knowledge of how they work. Moreover, the specific techniques and concerns of anesthesiologists regarding patient care are scarcely known outside of the specialty. Most physicians have had a paltry amount of training in anesthesia, if any at all. Within many medical schools, there is no requirement to rotate in anesthesiology; if required, the rotation is seen sometimes as a means to practice intubations and place IVs for a period of two to four weeks, instead of actually learning anesthesia techniques and practices. As their role in patient care has stretched outside of the operating room, anesthesiologists have found that there is often frustration and even conflict in dealing with other specialties that do not understand the concerns and necessities that accompany this practice. Why is NPO important? Why does the patient need to see a cardiologist pre-operatively? Why would the patient benefit from using Drug A vs Drug B? These questions come up not only in the operating room, but on the obstetrical floor, in the endoscopy suite, in the critical care units and elsewhere. It is the authors’ hope that this book, Anesthesia for Non-Anesthesiologists, will help to decrease such problems. With chapters written by a variety of anesthesiologists and subspecialty clinicians at a major teaching hospital, and edited by experienced academic physicians, the target audience for this work includes physicians, medical residents, and students who wish to understand how anesthesiologists think and why they think as they do. When the OSCEs were introduced as a formal assessment tool for the certification of anesthesia trainees in the United States, it was adopted in a way that was slightly different than the classic way of using OSCEs in other countries. One of the differences was in the limitation of the OSCE to examine only nine skills, six of which are communication and professionalism skills and three of which are for interpretation skills, although the focus of the American OSCE is on communication and professionalism. However, it did not ignore the interpretation skills, with at least two stations on the real exam dedicated to the interpretation skills. The general theme of this book is that it utilizes some adult learning techniques to fuel an interactive learning experience for the candidates, so that they can work together on building their skills and preparing for the OSCE component of their assessment. The authors worked carefully on creating a manuscript that can be used by the practicing examiner/standardized patient to guide the process of mock OSCE encounters in a fruitful, educative and enjoyable manner.
